The next step in this story is the quickest but also the most crucial to the home buying process… getting preapproved! We understand that the market is so competitive, so we wanted to show sellers, realtors, and the bank that Nick and I (and Oakley) were serious buyers. Our realtor needed us to get the preapproval before we could tour houses with her, and in this competitive market; we wouldn’t dare place an offer on a house without having the preapproval from ChoiceOne Bank.
Hours leading up to the preapproval appointment, I was terrified. I couldn’t sit still all day and I barely ate a thing because I was too nervous and excited.
The day before, Nick and I had gathered all the items we needed for the preapproval… pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, etc. We thought we were ready to go until I realized three hours before the appointment that I didn’t have my tax returns from 2015. I called our Lender, Carmen in a panic (Carmen is one of my favorite people in our home buying story) and she said, “Kylie… you need to breathe.” She assured me that everything would be fine. I half believed her as I sat in my office at work trembling.
Promptly at 5 pm, Nick and I were sitting across from Carmen and just like that we started the preapproval. I had so many thoughts racing through my head…
Are we normal? …Are we on the right track financially to buy a house? Are we too young?
I can’t believe 10 years ago Nick and I were 15-year-old BFFs and now we’re buying our first home… for our dog Oakley.
OMG Oakley is big enough to jump up to the kitchen counter now…
I feel nauseated.
Carmen could tell I was distracted and overwhelmed, so she took a moment to encourage us that we were on the right track and that she’d be with us through every step of the process. I knew we were in good hands.
After 20 minutes of Carmen filling out forms and 40 minutes of my questions, we were preapproved! We received a letter from ChoiceOne Bank that we gave to our realtor, Rachel. Ultimately it was quick and painless (despite my nerves). The next step was the exciting part… touring homes! I’ll save that for next time.
For now, take a look at the video below which serves as an uncanny portrayal of my anxiety the day of our preapproval 😂
